It was meant to be a brief escape, a few hours of laughter before returning home to her babies. Surveillance footage later released by police showed her leaving a bar in the early hours of the morning with three men. One of them was 23-year-old David Sparks.

Around 2:30 a.m., she was seen getting into Sparks’ truck. At 3 a.m., Savannah called her mother, saying she would be home later that morning. That call would be the last time her family heard her voice.

When Savannah did not return home, her mother reported her missing the following evening. What followed was an agonizing six-month search filled with heartbreak, uncertainty, and desperate hope. Investigators interviewed the men who had been with her that night. They learned she had been driven to a rural home in Garrard County. Two of the men claimed they left Sparks and Savannah alone at his residence.

Sparks told investigators that Savannah had asked for directions and that when he awoke, she was gone. He maintained he did not know where she was. When asked whether it had crossed his mind that Savannah might not be alive, Sparks replied that it had — but claimed he hoped she was safe.

Sparks eventually admitted to murdering Savannah and burying her on his parents’ farm. He pleaded guilty to murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. In December 2020, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder, along with an additional five years for abuse of a corpse. He will be eligible for parole after serving part of his sentence.

Yet even with the guilty plea, Savannah’s family was left without full closure. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the autopsy could not determine exactly how she died. That unanswered question remains a heavy burden for those who loved her.

At sentencing, Savannah’s aunt spoke powerful words, reminding the court that while the legal chapter may have closed, the emotional battle continues. Savannah’s sons will grow up knowing their mother was taken from them — and they will carry her memory forward.
