With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the Monroe County community mourns the tragic loss of James Jeffries, a 55-year-old resident of Peterstown, whose life was violently taken in a shocking incident on Friday morning in the Shanklin’s Ferry area of Monroe County.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the discovery was made around 9:40 a.m. on February 27 by two fishermen who came across a burned Ford Focus and a deceased individual along the riverbank. First Sergeant S. S. Keaton and Trooper First Class N. C. Patton responded promptly to the scene, followed by the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team to assist with processing the scene and gathering critical evidence.
Upon arrival, troopers confirmed the presence of James Jeffries, who was identified as the male subject found near the burned vehicle. At this time, authorities are investigating the death as a homicide. James’ body was transported to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. His next of kin have been notified, and the community grieves alongside his family during this devastating time.
James Jeffries was more than a name in an investigation. At 55, he was a valued member of Peterstown and the surrounding community, remembered by family, friends, and neighbors as a kind, dependable, and warm-hearted individual. Those who knew him describe a man who carried himself with integrity, someone who cared deeply for those around him and contributed positively to the community in ways both big and small.
The shocking circumstances of his death have left loved ones in disbelief, as the peaceful riverside where he was found became the site of a tragedy no one could have foreseen. Yet amid grief and shock, those who knew James hold tightly to the memories of his life — the conversations shared, the moments of laughter, and the quiet kindness he offered every day.
The ongoing investigation by the West Virginia State Police seeks to bring clarity, justice, and accountability for the loss of James Jeffries. While details remain limited, the impact of his life and the void left by his untimely death are already deeply felt throughout the community.
As Monroe County and Peterstown mourn, we pause to honor James’ legacy — a life marked by compassion, dedication to family and friends, and a spirit that touched all who knew him. Though his time on this earth ended far too soon, the memories he created and the love he shared will endure, a lasting tribute to a man whose presence made a difference.
May James Jeffries rest in eternal peace, and may his family, friends, and community find comfort and strength in remembering the life of a man who mattered so deeply.
