The communities of Tucson and Sahuarita are united in grief following the tragic loss of 19-year-old Jonathan Warren, whose life was taken in a heartbreaking hit-and-run crash on Interstate 19 in the early morning hours of March 3, 2026. At just 19 years old, Jonathan’s life was only beginning to unfold — filled with dreams, ambition, and the boundless potential that comes with youth.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), troopers were dispatched around 1:39 a.m. to reports of a man walking in the travel lanes near kilometer 78 on I-19. Upon arrival near kilometer 76, they discovered Jonathan deceased in the median lane. There were no vehicles at the scene, and no witnesses had observed the crash.
The silence of that early morning hour only deepened the tragedy — a young life lost on a quiet stretch of highway, leaving family and friends searching for answers.
The Investigation
As investigators processed the scene, they recovered vehicle parts that were later identified as belonging to a 2018–2025 Mercedes Sprinter van. The discovery provided the first crucial lead in a case that initially seemed clouded in uncertainty.
Within hours, De Leon Gonzalez, 57, of Tucson, contacted the Sahuarita Police Department, stating that he may have been involved in the fatal collision. Following an interview conducted by AZDPS, investigators located a Mercedes Sprinter van with recent damage at a business owned by Gonzalez. The vehicle was seized as evidence as authorities continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
While the legal process unfolds, Jonathan’s loved ones are left to face the devastating reality of life without him.
