The Decatur community is mourning the tragic and untimely loss of 26-year-old Alexandra Wilson, whose life was taken in a devastating shooting on Valentine’s Day. Friends, family, and neighbors are grappling with grief and disbelief after what authorities describe as a tragic accident that ended the life of a young woman full of promise and vitality.
According to Decatur Police Department, officers were called to a home in the 1700 block of North Summit Avenue around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting. Christian Luthy, who was present at the home, contacted 911 and reported that he had accidentally shot Alexandra.
Court documents obtained by WAND News reveal that Luthy had been working on an AR-15 style rifle in a gaming room while Alexandra was seated nearby. He reportedly told police that, after finishing, he “jokingly” pointed the firearm at Alexandra and pulled the trigger, believing it was not loaded. Tragically, a live round struck her in the torso. She was immediately transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Luthy was taken to police headquarters for questioning and was subsequently arrested on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
