In Loving Memory of a Precious Life Lost in Port Tobacco

With heavy hearts and enduring sorrow, the community of Port Tobacco continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of a 27-year-old woman whose life was tragically taken in a UTV crash last fall. What should have been an ordinary September evening became a moment that forever changed her family, friends, and the wider community of Charles County.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:30 p.m. on September 5, 2025, to the 7600 block of Carol Drive in Port Tobacco following reports of a crash involving a utility terrain vehicle. Investigators later determined that the UTV was traveling eastbound when, for reasons still under review, it left the roadway, struck multiple fixed objects and an embankment, and ultimately came to rest.

Tragically, the young woman who was a passenger in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, identified in court records as Jacob Lee Darbie, 31, of King George, was flown to a hospital with injuries that were reported as not life-threatening.

In the months that followed, the case moved forward through the legal system. A grand jury indicted the driver on charges including negligent manslaughter by vehicle and homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, along with additional related charges. Court records indicate that a bench warrant was issued and served on February 17, 2026. The matter remains pending in the Charles County Circuit Court.

Yet beyond the legal proceedings and official reports lies a much deeper and more painful truth: a vibrant 27-year-old woman lost her life far too soon.

She was more than a passenger in a tragic accident. She was a daughter whose family cherished her, a friend whose laughter filled rooms, and a young woman with dreams still unfolding. Those who knew her describe someone full of warmth and spirit — a person who embraced life wholeheartedly and cared deeply for the people around her.

Her absence has left a silence that is difficult to describe. The kind of silence that lingers at family gatherings. The kind that settles in during quiet moments of reflection. The kind that reminds everyone just how fragile life can be.

Friends recall her smile — bright, genuine, and comforting. They speak of her kindness, her loyalty, and her ability to bring people together. She had a way of making others feel valued and heard, whether through heartfelt conversations or simple, thoughtful gestures. She celebrated the successes of those she loved and stood beside them during life’s challenges.

For her family, the pain is immeasurable. No parent expects to outlive their child. No sibling anticipates a future without shared milestones. No friend imagines saying goodbye so suddenly. Grief has many layers — shock, anger, disbelief, sadness — and in the wake of such a preventable tragedy, those emotions can feel even heavier.

The community of Port Tobacco has rallied around her loved ones, offering prayers, support, and shared memories. In times of loss, small towns show their strength — neighbors become pillars of comfort, and collective mourning becomes a reminder that no one grieves alone.

Her passing also serves as a solemn reminder of the devastating consequences that impaired driving can have. A single decision can ripple outward in ways that can never be undone. While the legal process continues, her family and friends are left to navigate a future forever altered.

Though her time on earth was far too brief, her impact endures. She lives on in the stories told about her, in the love that surrounds her memory, and in the hearts of those who will forever carry her with them. Her life mattered. Her presence mattered. And her memory will continue to matter in the days, months, and years ahead.

As Charles County continues to reflect on this tragedy, may her loved ones find comfort in one another. May they hold tightly to the joyful memories that outshine the darkness of that September night. And may her legacy be one of love, connection, and the reminder to cherish every moment.

Rest peacefully. You were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten.
