In Loving Memory of Joseph Dsouza — Caroline County Mourns Life Tragically Lost in Fatal Route 480 Crash

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the Caroline County community mourns the tragic loss of Joseph Dsouza, a 30-year-old resident of Ridgely, whose life was abruptly cut short in a fatal crash on Maryland Route 480 yesterday afternoon. Joseph’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

According to the Maryland State Police Crash Team, the collision occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. north of Eveland Road. Joseph was driving a 2017 Kia Sorento when his vehicle collided with an Isuzu box truck. Despite the immediate response of emergency medical personnel, Joseph was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger traveling with Joseph, identified as 50-year-old Hillary Coelho of Kuwait, was airlifted by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a local trauma center. She remains hospitalized and continues to receive medical treatment. The driver of the Isuzu box truck, 50-year-old James Sherry of Greensboro, was also transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police indicates that the Isuzu truck was traveling north on Route 480 when it crossed the center line into the southbound lane. Troopers believe Joseph’s Kia attempted to avoid a head-on collision by moving onto the southbound shoulder, where the crash ultimately occurred. Authorities have noted that impairment may have been a contributing factor, and potential charges are pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Beyond the circumstances of the crash, Joseph Dsouza was a beloved son, friend, and community member whose presence touched many lives. At 30 years old, Joseph was in the prime of his life, full of ambition, energy, and the promise of a future filled with possibilities. Those who knew him recall his kindness, reliability, and the genuine care he extended to those around him. He was a person who could light up a room with his smile, offer a helping hand without hesitation, and leave an enduring impact through both small gestures and meaningful connections.

Joseph’s untimely passing is a stark reminder of the fragility of life. What began as an ordinary afternoon ended in a moment of irreversible loss, leaving family, friends, and the Caroline County community grappling with grief. Yet amid the sorrow, there is solace in remembering the life Joseph lived — the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the memories he leaves behind.

The Caroline County community also recognizes the courage and dedication of the first responders who acted swiftly to assist all involved, demonstrating professionalism and compassion in the face of tragedy.

As we honor Joseph Dsouza’s memory, we remember him not for the tragedy that claimed his life, but for the life he lived — full of warmth, promise, and love for others. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his presence.
