According to authorities, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 6:59 a.m. on Saturday to the 4300 block of Route 176 following a report of a person down. A 911 caller had discovered a man lying face down in the grass near the north side of Route 176, just west of the new residential development of Lennar at Woodlore Townes. Emergency radio traffic indicated that the victim was unresponsive and his breathing status was unknown.
McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein identified the victim on Monday as Jon Surch, a longtime resident of Crystal Lake. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the community, as Jon was known not only as a devoted father and grandfather but also as a neighbor and friend who brought kindness and warmth into the lives of those around him.
