In Loving Memory: Margaret Hanley

The community is mourning the passing of Margaret Hanley, 72, the beloved mother of former University of Kentucky cheer coach Jomo Thompson, whose life was tragically cut short earlier this month. Margaret was found deceased Saturday night in Liberty County, Georgia, after being reported missing, leaving her family, friends, and the broader community in deep sorrow.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Margaret Hanley was discovered next to her vehicle on Old Hines Road, a rural area south of Savannah, Georgia. Her car was reportedly stuck in the mud, and authorities have confirmed that it will be impounded as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Margaret, a longtime resident of Southern Oaks Drive in Jacksonville, Florida, was last seen on February 4. Concerned neighbors reported her missing on February 11 to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Prior to that, her vehicle had been captured on a Flock camera in Liberty County on February 8, suggesting she had traveled out of state before her disappearance was reported.

In reviewing her movements, law enforcement noted a $500 transaction from her bank account at an unknown Walgreens on February 9—one day after her vehicle appeared on camera. Jomo Thompson cooperated fully with authorities during the investigation, providing insight into his mother’s last known activities.

Neighbors and friends described Margaret as a warm and caring presence in the community. While she had begun showing some signs of cognitive decline, neighbors told investigators she had never been formally diagnosed with dementia. Those who knew her remember her kindness, her dedication to her family, and the love she shared with her son, Jomo, and others around her.

Margaret Hanley’s sudden passing has left an irreplaceable void for her family and community. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to remember the joy and love she brought into the lives of those around her. Her story also highlights the challenges families face when a loved one begins to experience memory loss, and it serves as a poignant reminder to cherish every moment with those we hold dear.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, working alongside the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, to ensure that all circumstances surrounding Margaret’s death are fully understood.

Margaret Hanley’s life will be remembered for the love she shared, the family she cherished, and the quiet but enduring impact she made on those who knew her.
