Child Stabs Man in Defense of Mother During Domestic Violence Incident in Fort Madison, Iowa
FORT MADISON, Iowa — A domestic disturbance in Fort Madison took a terrifying turn earlier this month when a child reportedly stabbed a man in defense of his mother during a violent altercation inside their home.
According to authorities, the incident began on February 7, 2026, when 32-year-old Jacob Haage returned home after work and began drinking heavily. Police say an argument soon ensued, during which Haage allegedly punched a wall and injured his hand. His mother, the victim, reportedly tried to get him medical attention, attempting to take him to the emergency room, but Haage allegedly became belligerent, punching her in the face before leaving the vehicle.
Police say the situation escalated later that night when Haage returned home around midnight and continued acting aggressively. He allegedly began breaking items inside the residence and attacking the victim. Authorities state that at one point, Haage placed the woman in a chokehold, preventing her from breathing. She was able to break free and ran to her child’s room for safety.
According to investigators, Haage then pinned her down in front of the child, leaving the child with no option but to defend their mother. The child stabbed Haage during the altercation, which ultimately resulted in him being found by responding officers on February 8 with multiple stab wounds.
Haage was subsequently arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault impeding airway. Police confirmed that no charges are expected against the child, recognizing the act as defensive in nature.
Authorities have highlighted the case as a sobering example of how domestic violence can escalate rapidly and impact entire families, including children who may be forced into traumatic situations. The victim survived the ordeal and police continue to investigate the incident to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
