In Loving Memory of Andrew Katzberg

In Loving Memory of Andrew Katzberg

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the communities of Hastings, Kenesaw, and the surrounding areas mourn the tragic loss of 24-year-old Andrew Katzberg, a dedicated young firefighter whose life was cut far too short in a devastating accident on Thursday morning.

Andrew was killed in a train collision that occurred along Highway 136 near Amboy, approximately four miles east of Red Cloud. According to authorities, the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. when a hay grinder struck an unloaded freight train operated by BNSF Railway. The powerful impact led to the derailment of 10 railcars, leaving a scene of destruction and heartbreak in its wake. Andrew was pronounced deceased at the scene.

While officials confirmed that no members of the train crew were injured, the loss of Andrew has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the entire Nebraska community. The investigation is currently being led by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska Department of Transportation, and BNSF personnel. At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Highway 136 was closed between Red Cloud and Guide Rock following the collision and remained shut down until the early hours of Friday morning, reopening around 3 a.m. But even as the roadway has returned to normal traffic, life for those who loved Andrew will never be the same.

Andrew Katzberg was more than a name in a headline. He was a son, a friend, a neighbor, and a brave firefighter who chose a life of service. At just 24 years old, he had already demonstrated a commitment to protecting others — stepping forward when others stepped back, answering calls for help without hesitation. Firefighters embody courage, compassion, and sacrifice, and Andrew carried those qualities with pride and honor.

Those who knew Andrew describe him as hardworking, dependable, and kind-hearted. Whether responding to emergencies, helping a neighbor, or spending time with loved ones, he brought sincerity and strength into every space he entered. His dedication to his community reflected the very best of small-town Nebraska values — integrity, loyalty, and an unwavering willingness to serve.

In moments like these, words often feel inadequate. The suddenness of such a loss leaves behind shock and grief that ripple far beyond the immediate scene of tragedy. For Andrew’s family, there are no easy answers — only memories, love, and the painful reality of a future without him physically present.

Yet even in sorrow, there is gratitude — gratitude for the 24 years Andrew shared with the world, for the lives he touched, for the service he gave, and for the example he set. His legacy will live on in the firehouse bays where he trained, in the roads and fields of Nebraska he called home, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

As the investigation continues and the community begins the difficult journey of healing, may we remember Andrew not solely for the tragic circumstances of his passing, but for the life he lived — a life marked by bravery, service, and love.

To his family, fellow firefighters, and friends: may you find comfort in the support of your community and strength in the memories you hold dear. Andrew Katzberg’s light may have been extinguished far too soon, but the impact of his life will continue to burn brightly in the lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Andrew. Your watch may have ended, but your courage and spirit will never be forgotten.
